Responsible gaming: keeping poker an entertainment
Real-money poker is gambling and should be treated as such: an entertainment expense with a chance of winning, not a source of income. Self-control tools are built into the room client; here is what they are and how to use them.
Age
Play is allowed from 18 years; the room verifies age through documents, and an underage account is closed with the deposit returned.
Signs it is time to stop
- Playing with money meant for other purposes, or on credit.
- Chasing losses, raising stakes after a losing run.
- Hiding play from family, lying about amounts.
- Playing to escape problems, irritation when unable to play.
Tools in the client
The profile lets you set a deposit cap per period, a time limit at the tables and self-exclusion for a period or permanently. A limit takes effect at once; lifting it is delayed, so the decision cannot be impulsive. A limit set on a calm day protects against decisions made on tilt.
The bankroll as protection
Separate poker money unrelated to living costs, plus the buy-in reserve rule, is the first line of defence: a player on a bankroll cannot lose more than was decided in advance. See bankroll management.
